Information for Inmate Families and Friends

Welcome to the Vermont Department of Corrections Constituency Services Unit Page!

We are here to provide information to families, friends, and professionals wishing to find resources, ask questions and provide assistance to those in our care and custody.  We are only able to provide general information unless we can verify that you have a signed release.  If you do not have a release form, and have a specific question, please connect with the individual you are reaching out about and ask that they complete one with their assigned caseworker.

Whether you have specific questions or concerns regarding programming, visiting, procedures, mail, medical care, housing, movement, etc. or just want general information, please fill out a form using the Online Portal and someone from our office will get back to you within 24 hours.  If we are unable to answer your question we will refer you to the person who can best give you the information.

COVID 19 Information for Constituents

Vaccinations

As of January 25, 2021, Vermont began to offer Covid-19 vaccinations to Vermonters ages 75 and older. Consistent with eligibility requirements for all Vermonters, Incarcerated individuals age 75+ will be able to receive their vaccines at the facility in which they reside over the next several weeks (the vaccine consists of two doses, several weeks apart). These individuals have been notified of their eligibility and registration for the vaccine is being completed by medical and Vermont Department of Health staff.

Once the first age tier is completed, individuals ages 70-74 will become eligible for the vaccine, followed by 65-69, followed by individuals ages 18-64 with chronic health conditions. For more information see https://www.healthvermont.gov/covid-19/vaccine/about-covid-19-vaccines-vermont

Family and Friends Information

Friends and family members may deposit money on funds on the inmate’s account for the purchase of commissary or telephone time. This can be done on-line https://www.accesscorrections.com or by use of a Deposit Coupon. These coupons are available from inmates and in the lobby of Correctional Facilities or on our website under Information for Inmate Families and Friends.

At times, an incarcerated individual may ask his family or friends to deposit money on the account of another inmate. VTDOC recommends families do not deposit money for inmates other than their own family members or personal friends. This practice is often connected to contraband or fraud, and you may unknowingly become involved in activities that could prevent you from entering a correctional facility again, or where you may be confronted by Law Enforcement. There is no legitimate reason for your loved one to need you to place funds on another inmate’s account. If you get such a request and you have concerns or questions, we encourage you to reach out to your loved one’s caseworker, or Superintendent so we can assist you, and your loved one in resolving this request.

The Vermont State Legislature passed a law in 2020 providing for earned time effective 1/1/21. VTDOC has been reviewing and awarding this earned time in accordance with the law.
A new law was passed this year (Senate Bill 18) which disqualifies for those serving a sentence on 1/1/21 for one of the below crimes from earned time.

Camp Agape

CAMP AGAPE is a fun camp for Vermont children who have a parent in prison or under the supervision of the Vermont Department of Corrections. The word “Agape” is a Greek word that means unconditional, no-strings-attached love. That is what Camp Agape is all about. Accepting and honoring each child for the person they are.

Camp Agape offered its first camp in August, 2006 for 28 children. For each summer since, we have given a week of overnight camping to Vermont children with a parent in prison—a total of over 750 free weeks of camp. Once children turn twelve, they move into our Older Kid programs. Some have gone on to be Counselors-In-Training.
