Do I need to be in Oregon?
Nope! We’re based in Oregon, but our volunteers are spread across the U.S. and beyond.
If you are local to Eugene or Veneta, we always need help with mail processing & event support.
Do I need prior experience?
Not at all. We welcome people of all skill levels, and provide guidance and training materials along the way. As long as you’re comfortable using a computer and checking email, we’ll help you learn the rest.
How do I get started?
Start by filling out our volunteer application form. Once we receive your form, you’ll get a welcome email, and we’ll guide you through the onboarding and training process.
What do I need to volunteer?
- A willingness to learn and communicate
-
An email address you check regularly
-
Basic computer skills (email, file sharing, etc.)
- A computer (laptop or desktop) and reliable internet connection (for most roles)
-
Helpful but not necessary: Google account access (for shared drives and docs)
What’s the time commitment?
Totally up to you. Some volunteers check in once a week for an hour or two. Others are involved daily. We’re flexible, and grateful. Some projects are one and done, most are ongoing. Choose what works for you.
Is this a paid position?
Nope. Adopt an Inmate is entirely volunteer-run. None of us are paid, we’re powered by purpose and passion.
Do you offer service learning credit?
Yes. We’ve supported students through externships, research projects, community service hours, capstone projects, and service learning courses, We’re happy to support your goals. If you have requirements, let us know in your form or email us at volunteer@adoptaninmate.org.
Can I post about my volunteer work on social media?
Please do! We love seeing your impact. Just remember to protect the privacy people inside, and don’t post names or identifying details unless we’ve cleared it.
Will I receive a certificate or recommendation letter?
We’re happy to provide a certificate of service or write a letter of recommendation for active volunteers upon request.
Are there other roles I can grow into?
Yes. All of our core team members started as volunteers. If you’re ready to take on more responsibility, let us know, we’d love to grow with you.
Can I volunteer with a friend, class, or group?
Yes! Group volunteering can be a great way to connect and contribute together, including United Way of Lane County’s annual Days of Caring. Reach out to explore options.
Do you track volunteer hours?
Yes! Volunteers log their hours using a simple form on our website. You’ll receive the link and instructions during onboarding. This helps us track impact, report totals for grants, and celebrate our collective work. (Leah will be very proud of you). You can also request a printout of your logged hours at any time
